dumping waste. >> thanks to a whistle-blower that tipped off the bus -- the coast guard, complete with video. >> the sentence is it a final step in a federal investigation that began in january. the whistle blower was a crew member on the ship when it docked in baltimore. >> this was the ship. it was on a voyage from gibraltar to baltimore in december of last year when federal prosecutors said crewmembers and dumped about 6,000 gallons of contaminated waste into the water along the way. according to authorities, the 100 foot hole is used to bypass the solution from going into the water. the result was oily waste going into the water. >> the challenge was, what do we

do with the excess oil and pollution that is gathered on the ship's going across our oceans, tens of thousands of ships every year? often, too often, they and that the dumping of sludge into the ocean. >> in this instance, the crew members passed a note to authorities in the coast guard. >> the note to said it was to notify as of discharge between a member in december of 2009. -- between november and december of 2009. >> crewmembers were instructed to cover it and to lie to the coast guard. the company was ordered to pay penalty. $750,000 of it will be used to clean up chesapeake bay. the crew member will receive

in north baltimore, -- the cause of an early-morning fire in north baltimore is still under investigation tonight. six family members were inside at the time. all of them survived. but the 67-year-old grandmother is in a hospital. she heard her leg jumping and of a two-story window -- hurt her leg jumping out of a two-story window. that fire left six family pets dead. the cause is under investigation. >> the maryland spca is appalled to learn a man charged with animal abuse had been court appointed to volunteer at the shelter. he is accused of beating a job with a pipe in early august. the dog was severely beaten and eventually euthanize. the court told him they would drop its case if he stayed out

of trouble and perform 50 hours of community service at the spca. the application was immediately denied. >> that this application -- with recommendation would not have been made if this person had been working with children. >> the spca was never consulted about the recommendation. there is no word tonight on how his case will move forward. >> city cops are -- are urging all hospitals to have a plan should they ever faced a situation like what happened at johns hopkins last week. they announced plans to meet three times a year to enforce security protocol and to engage in drills to prepare for mass evacuation. >> and finally, we want to be sure that we have some kind of

that will start pushing in our direction for the next couple of days. with the heat and humidity trying to move in, a couple of thunderstorms will be possible tomorrow afternoon and evening. it will bring rain to the region on thursday, but -- it will stick around in the region a little bit on thursday, but just hot and hazy and humid for friday. although fall officially begins tomorrow night, the first day of fall will feel like summer. 86 to 91, humid and the possibility of a storm. winds on the bay will be gusting to 20 knots. the national weather service has issued a small craft advisory. it looks like it will stay essentially dry on the lower eastern shore tomorrow with high temperatures around 88. at on the atlantic, it is tropical storm lisa to keep an eye on.
